Going to the spa is a great way to relax and relieve stress, but it isn’t always easy for us moms to get out and go to the spa. Not to mention it can be pretty expensive. So perhaps a great alternative would be to spend less money on some products to use at home. But the question is how to have a spa day at home and get the same great feeling you would as a day out? Well, let’s take a look at some tips on how to make a spa experience in your own home.

Studies show that a relaxing massage is a great way to relieve stress by reducing blood pressure. But a spa doesn’t only provide treatment, it provides a relaxing environment. From the moment you walk into the moment you leave, it is all about relaxation.

So how do you replicate this same feeling at home?

Set the mood

Start by transforming your bathroom into a relaxing environment. Set the mood with calming music and place the perfect scents around. You can place a diffuser in the bathroom with some essential oils. Candles will provide a calming setting with nice lighting so you can purchase some aromatherapy candles or make your own.

Set up your towels and slip into your robe. Make you a spa drink, here are some delicious recipes. Try some herbal tea or a glass of your favorite champagne.

 Choose your treatments

There are many different ways to treat yourself it just depends on how much time you want to spend. So let’s look at some great pampering options.

Face Mask

Who doesn’t want soft beautiful skin, especially where it is most visible – your face? A facial mask is a great way to pamper yourself and the ingredients may be as close as your kitchen. You can make a facial mask out of bananas, milk, mayonnaise, oatmeal, lemons, and more.

Avocado Mask

1/2 ripe avocado

1 teaspoon plain organic yogurt

1 teaspoon of honey

Foot Soak

After a long day on your feet, who wouldn’t mind a nice foot soak? I know I wouldn’t! Foot soaks are my favorite way to pamper myself or be pampered for that matter. Not only does it feel good to get a good foot massage and soak them tired feet, it is a great way to keep your feet looking nice. Plus, you can set it up and relax in front of the television or while you sit at the desk.

Depending on the foot soaker you use you may be able to get a nice foot massage at the same time.

Hair Treatment

As a busy mom sometimes we can neglect something as important as our hair. We may not have time to get out to get our hair treated but it can be easily done at home. There are plenty homemade hair treatments you can make right from your kitchen.

For dry hair try this.

Hot Oil Treatment– one of the simplest but most effective homemade treatments that can be customized to different hair types. Here is one recipe:

What you need

  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Jojoba Oil
  • 1 tablespoon Coconut Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Tea Tree Oil

Do not make the oil hot or it will burn your scalp. You want the oil to be lukewarm. You can dampen your hair before adding the oil. Massage the oil into the hair and then wrap with a towel. Wash out 20 to 30 minutes later with a mild soap.

For damaged hair try this:

Coconut/Honey Treatment- full of nutrients which make it an automatic and easy go to ingredient in hair treatments. Here is the recipe:

What you need

  • 3 tablespoon Coconut Oil
  • 1/4 cup Honey

After you mix it together apply it to your damp hair. Let it stay on for about 20 to 30 minutes. Wash it off with a mild shampoo.

After your face mask and hair treatment, it is time to wash everything off and relax. A nice bath is a great way to finish off your spa day. I love bubble baths. After a long day, nothing feels better to me than a nice warm bubble bath with essential oils. Here are a few tips to make it the most relaxing bath experience.

  • Add your essential oils when the bath is halfway full.
  • Make sure the temperature is warm, this is best for relaxation. You don’t want the bath too hot, no more than 92 degrees Fahrenheit. Use your wrist to check the temperature, never your hand.
  • Use a body scrub to massage your body to keep yourself engage and allow your body to relax.
  • Close your eyes and meditate.
  • Sip on your spa drink or read a nice book, no cell phones!
  • Play some relaxing music.
  • Take the time to think about yourself and leave the stress outside the bathroom, remember this is your spa day!

If you don’t have a nice jet tub, you can still get that massage feeling with a bubble bath spa massage for your tub. Also, you can use a bath pillow so you can relax without hurting your neck.

It is always important to find time for yourself. We all know that self-care is important for many things but what do we consider self-care. Yea we should eat well, sleep right, and exercise, but will those things keep us truly happy. Maybe!

So remember parents in your busy days and weeks, find some time to pamper yourselves. Find some time to give yourself love. After all, you give everyone love so why not love yourself. You deserve it!

I agree that relaxation and meditation are so essential to us, especially that we’re always stressed and under pressure.

    1. I am so sorry to hear you don’t have a tub. Maybe you could get a shower seat and at least have a way to sit for a while. Yes, I agree that music is relaxing. Glad you loved the post and thank you for commenting!

  3. Hi, Melissa. That is a great idea to do spa at home. Especially because I have two teenager daughters whom I can ask their help to serve me, lol. Thank for all the details. I saved it for the application.

    1. Hi Melani,
That would be great, they can serve you and give you a foot massage lol. 🙂 I like to have my kids serve me, I serve them so why not, Lol! Thanks for reading and commenting!!!

  4. Hi Melissa, I just love the relaxing music in your video. Your stress-free tips are awesome. Thank for the great recipes to target specific areas that need attention in order to benefit from being stress-free.

This is something that is easy to implement at home with products you already have, and now I can put them to good use.

    1. I am glad you enjoyed the music and recipes. Stress is something we all deal with and we all need time to relax. Thanks for reading and the comment!

  5. Melissa, what is the key to carving out the time for this and enlisting the help of your mate, if they are at home? Sometimes dad’s just want to play a little and then go relax too. I find that parenting takes up every spare moment! If the child is sleeping, it is hard to catch up with other tasks, but take a spa day. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to tactfully ask for help and get it, lol? Thank you, Lynne

    1. Hi Lynne,
I think time management is difficult for all us parents. We put a lot of time and effort into many things, such as working, cooking, and cleaning. Sometimes we don’t have time for ourselves. You can find some time management tips here to help you make extra time when you need to have a spa day. As for getting help from daddy, I know one way is to not nag. Men hate nagging. Even though sometimes they act like kids(sorry guys)they don’t want us to treat them like we are their mommy, can you blame them. I think you should ask him, not in a frustrated way, but come to him as your partner. Ask him to help with a chore at least once a week. Like maybe help to make dinner or do the laundry. Honestly, it took sometime before my husband became eager to help. He even asks me now. I know I use to nag and I stopped, so that is what I always try to tell others. I hope that helps.

  6. Hi Melissa, Oh la la, sign me up for one of these days. I loved the drink recipes. They look yummy. I don’t like sweet drinks so much. Which one would you recommend? What I really liked about your article is that everything looks pretty easy to do. If I had to go to elaborate steps to make a spa day, that would be stressful. But these ideas seemed pretty simple to implement. Thanks for sharing with us. I really gotta do this.

    1. Hi Jackie,
Whenever I make drinks at home, the one thing I love is I can put in as much sweetener(sugar or whatever) as I want. I don’t like too much sugar, specifically because I am trying to prevent health problems. If you want to relax I recommend tea. You can make different kinds like a nice lavender or chamomile and add how much sugar you want. Plus you get the relaxing effects of the lavender. I am sure there is a recipe for a nice lavender lemonade cocktail you could whip together. If champagne isn’t your thing a nice glass of wine will sure do the trick, am I right? It is all about what makes you relax.

  7. Hi Melissa, Wow where was this page when I needed some relaxing for myself? I could make my own relaxing spa at home. Or when my daughter was making crazy with all her pre teen attitude lol. Awesome I think I’ll try some of these treatments at home just because I can.

    1. Yes, you can and you should. As soon as you can take some time and make you a nice spa day and tell me how it goes.

  8. Hi, great post! I don’t have any kids yet but taking the time to relax I’m sure is much needed for all the moms out there! And going to the spa is so expensive now, you offered some great options for at home relaxation.
Enjoyed reading this article, made me want to go home and do a face mask!

    1. Hi Amy,
Though my article is tailored for mothers, everyone needs time to relax. We all are susceptible to stress and a relaxing day is always need. Even men can have a spa day in a different type of way. It doesn’t matter if you are a mom, dad, or just need some stress relief”me” time is always beneficial.

  9. This is a great reminder that relaxation doesn’t have to come at a huge price tag. most of us have all the things we need at home to replicate much of the spa experience. I really need to do more raw honey skin and hair treatments!

    1. I think we all need to make time at home to relax and yes we can replicate most of these things. The cost is a huge benefit. Nothing wrong with going out, but it is much easier to stay in. Thanks for the comment!

  10. This here is a great post to help people wind down and help themselves from busy days. Not only does taking a bath in warm water help you to relax but it is good for your body in other ways. Relaxing in warm water is good for your stomach and muscles also. Letting your body rejuvenate and heal itself.

    1. Hi Fred,
I agree, taking a warm bath is a great way to relax your body and it is good for your stomach and muscles. You can soak in a bath or just sit in a spa and let the steam do the same thing. I love to wind down in a bathtub but sometimes just sitting in a sauna is great too!
