It is already a very difficult job being a parent so trying to balance a full-time job (or even a part-time job) and a family can be very stressful. Taking care of the home is stressful enough, so I don’t know how I would function with my health issues if I had to hold down a nine to five and take care of my kids, the home, and the finances, but there are some very brave moms (and dads) who have to do this every day. Because it isn’t always easy to find answers and it is important to keep yourself healthy I have comprised a list of 10 ways to moms can balance work and family.
1. Drop the guilt
If there is one thing I’ve learned, guilt can add more stress. A lot of us mothers feel guilt because we have to maintain a job that can take time from our family. Our first priority should always be to our children but you should never feel guilty for doing what is necessary to care for your home.
2. Allow time for work and time for home
Work needs to get done and unfortunately, sometimes that can mean hours spilled off into your time at home. So you need to find a way to manage your time at work effectively so you can have your time at home for your family. Develop a routine that allows you to manage your time and projects so everything gets done before you leave the office.
And when you are home do not be tempted to check your emails so turn off your work cell phone. This way you are devoted to your family and you won’t have the guilt of letting work interfere with your family.
3. Allow the kids to help
This is something that too many of us parents take for granted. I would do everything in my home from the meal planning and cooking to the cleaning (and a lot of things I still do by myself) but you do not have to do everything.
But don’t be afraid to get the kids involved. You can save a lot of time by giving them age-appropriate chores or just ask for a little help when you need. My kids love to help make dinner or even make their own dinner on some nights.
4. Get enough sleep
This can’t be stressed enough. Optimal sleep allows you to perform optimally. If you are tired you will not be able to perform at work the way you are expected and take care of your home.
Make sure you get a full nights rest so that you can balance work and home.
5. Find a quality sitter
For those who do not have certain time to spend with their children and will need extra help with things like errands or picking up their children from school, make sure quality child care is looked into. Write a list of everything you need taken care of and make a well-informed decision.
6. Communication is important
Don’t forget to make time to communicate with your husband. Talk to each other about how your day went and anything stressful you had to deal with. This will help makes things a lot less stressful and easier on you.
7. Make Family Activities
Spending time with your kids is not only critical to their well being but it will help your family grow stronger. It relieves stress to spend time together laughing and communicating and it is great for you to relieve your guilt. Have a family night with some great board games or a movie night with pizza.
8. Don’t forget “Me Time”
Work does not qualify as time alone, you still need time every day to yourself. You can snuggle up with a nice book before bed or take a nice warm bath with your favorite essential oil. Both of those will help relieve your stressful day and make falling asleep a lot easier.
9. Keep the fire going
Don’t forget to spend time with daddy aside from communicating with each other.
Take at least one day a month to spend time with each other to keep the flames in your relationship going. If you can’t afford to go out put the kids to bed and cuddle up on the couch.
10. Manage time to make mornings easier
Chaotic mornings can make getting the kids in school and getting to work that much more difficult. You should take steps to ensure that the morning runs as smooth as possible. Lunches can be made in the evenings and outfits can be chosen for the week on the weekends. Prepare your work papers at night so that you have less to worry about in the morning.
One of the hardest things about balancing work and family is being able to properly manage your time. Finding ways to make each task a little bit easier each day will make your life a bit simpler.
Getting help from your children and your partner is okay and will help take some of the load off your shoulder so have a conversation with your family as soon as possible to get the help you need.
Never feel guilty for being a mother that works, trust me your kids are just fine and everything will work out.
These are just 10 ways for moms can balance work and family but there are other ways other moms use every day. What about you? Do you have your own tip you like to use to help you get through the pressures of work and home?
